From The Hotel Hanaveise (17 E’has 7), dir. P. Delara

01 INT. HOTEL ATTIC - DAY 01

Over HANAVEISE OVERTURE:

DACH'OSMER COLVINAR (nineteen with fine, elven features) and his MANSERVANT (forties, part-goblin) inspect the attic inch by inch.

As the OVERTURE FADES, Colvinar throws his hands up.

COLVINAR (spoken)

Yes! This will be the place!

02 INT. HOTEL FOYER - DAY 02

The hotel's grand staircase, freshly polished and lined with rich carpeting, dominates the frame. An excessive collection of luggage lays piled neatly between the stairs and the hotel’s entrance.

The CHORUS OF TWENTY-FOUR BELL-HOPS (young men, ages 16-22, mixed features) sweeps into the room in a series of leaping quartets. They arrange themselves before the stairs in three rows of eight.

Begin GOSSIP OF THE BELL-HOPS I.

BELL-HOPS

IT IS NOT OUR PLACE TO QUARREL
OVER MATTERS OF THE MORAL
AND OUR VIRTUE WE WOULD NEVER
THROW ASKEW

BUT TO MEN OF SO FEW VICES
THERE IS LITTLE THAT ENTICES
AS A RUMOUR WE MAY QUICKLY
MISCONSTRUE

IT APPEARS WE ARE TODAY
A HAPPY FEW!

The bell-hops ascend the stairs one by one, each taking his own stair. They stand at attention, ready to serve.

MER HANAVAR (elven, twenty-one, holds himself as a much older man) crowns the staircase, hands kept behind his back.

HANAVAR (recit)

Gentlemen!
We bear the best of news!

As he descends a step, his posture remains impeccable.

HANAVAR (recit)

A man of noble bearing
Now rests within our house.

BELL-HOPS (recit)

How fine!
His breeding is how fine?

Another step down.

HANAVAR (recit)

So fine is this man's breeding,
His coin purse bears a seal.
Best of all, Dach'osmer seems
Intent to stay the year.

BELL-HOPS (recit)

The year! And he has chosen here?

Colvinar descends three steps in quick succession.

HANAVAR (recit)

Take caution, gentlemen:
Before your wagging tongues–

He feigns stumbling down five more steps, putting him right in the middle of the grand staircase.

HANAVAR (recit)

–Fall out!

Begin THE JUNIOR PROPRIETOR'S ADVICE.

Close on Hanavar as he leads the chorus. The ambient lights dim; spot the key light to encircle Hanavar.

HANAVAR

WINE DELIGHTS
AND BRANDY BITES
AND METHEGLIN SOFTENS THE BLOW
BUT FOR A FINE BUSINESS TO GROW:

BELL-HOPS

'TIS MONEY WHICH
KEEPS A MAN FED!

As Hanavar descends further, he fixes the uniforms of his bell-hops: straightening a tie here, pushing back a hat there.

HANAVAR

LOVERS STRAY
AND FRIENDS BETRAY
ACQUAINTANCES MAY COME AND GO
BUT WHEN ONE IS LAID TRULY LOW:

BELL-HOPS

'TIS WEALTH WHICH WILL
PROP UP HIS HEAD!

The bell-hops disperse and surround the pile of luggage. They reform their line up the stairs and pass each gilded case up as fire-men pass buckets of water.

BELL-HOPS (cont'd)

THE SPEND-THRIFT IS
SAFE FROM HIS GREED

HANAVAR

BUT THE MISER IS
WISER INDEED

BELL-HOPS

THE GRIEVANCE IS LESS
THAN THE GAINS

(with Hanavar:)

WHEN PURSE STRINGS PULL
STRONGER THAN REINS!

20 INT. HOTEL TEAHOUSE - NIGHT 20

[...]

COLVINAR (recit)

Your kindness, Osmerrem,
Cannot be overstated.

SERASARAN (recit)

Then do not overstate it.

COLVINAR (recit)

We fear that there is more:
Your virtue, Osmerrem,
We do not wish to question
Nor see brought into question by
the people on your floor.

SERASARAN (recit)

You'll take the invitation, boy,
Now lead us to our door.

At full height, she stands head and shoulders above him. With the determined set of her ears and her cold, impassive stare, she would have made a fine Zhasan.

Hesitantly, he bows. He brings her up the stairs.

21 INT. WIDOW'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS 21

We see Colvinar and Serasaran enter the pitch-dark room from afar, their forms silhouetted by the light from the hall. Serasaran approaches the kamera and inserts a coin into the gas meter.

The lights reveal an Osmerrem's dressing-room. The walls have been covered in tapestries, and every surface bears some bottle or trinket. The only inconsistency is the four-poster bed, which she has canopied with lace and silk.

Serasaran takes her place at the reading chair in the corner. She pats the plush foot stool across from her.

SERASARAN (recit)

Sit,
Dach'osmer.
We would not wish you ill.

Colvinar approaches. He steps slowly, as though the carpet might reach up and swallow him whole at any minute.

SERASARAN (recit) (cont'd)

Our husband is with Ulis and
We seek no other men.

At last, he sits. He leans in, curious.

SERASARAN (recit) (cont'd)

...Nor
Should we seek
Our husband, given chance.
It was by his last orders that
We were ourself interred.

COLVINAR (spoken)

Interred?

The matron's posture softens. She too leans forward.

SERASARAN (recit)

No,
"Imprisoned"
Would be the better word—-
Until our silks and velvets make
The finest winding-sheet.

Begin THE WIDOW CONFESSES HER GRIEF.

53 INT. LAUNDRESS'S QUARTERS 53

[...]

The hand-mirror shakes in Temrin's unstable grip.

Hanavar does not take it from her. Instead, he stands behind her and looks over her shoulder.

Begin THE MIRROR HOLDS THY SORROW.

HANAVAR

THE MIRROR
HOLDS THY SORROW
I CAN SEE IT
I CAN SEE IT

He places his hands on her slim shoulders.

HANAVAR (cont'd)

I WOULD HOLD IT
BEAR IT FOR THEE
AND IT WOULD BE
MINE TO CARRY

Gradually, he brings one of his hands up to her cheek so that he might turn her head to face him.

HANAVAR (cont'd)

AND YOU WOULD BE
FAIR AS AUTUMN
AND YOUR EYES WOULD
SHINE SO BRIGHTLY
LIKE THE MIRROR
IN THE SUN.

He strokes a thumb over her cheek. Their faces grow closer—-until she pulls away.

TEMRIN

IN AUTUMN
COLD IS CATCHING

We follow Temrin as she stands and approaches the window with somnambulant grace.

TEMRIN (cont'd)

AND THE DAY SHINES
HALF AS BRIGHTLY
AND THE STARS
FORGET THEIR MOORING
AND THEIR DUTY
TO THE SKY

A breeze from the old window casts a chill upon Temrin. She tightens her shawl fiercely.

TEMRIN (cont'd)

I CAN SEE IT
I CAN SEE IT
AS IT SOFTENS
SPREADS AND WITHERS

Back on Hanavar, still where we left him, an anxious hand at the base of his throat.

TEMRIN (cont'd)

I MUST HOLD IT
BEAR IT BRAVELY
LIKE THE MIRROR
HOLDS ME HERE.

The Hanaveise signet ring still rests on the dresser. It is too gaudy to be an oath-band, but Hanavar takes it in hand.

He turns it in his fingers.
